Psychology, Lecture February 13, 2008 Synaptic Transmission AP causes Synaptic vesicles to dump contents into gap (synaptic clep) between neuron Contents are chemicals called neurotransmitters Glutamate Excitatory neurotransmitter Involved in learning and memory Chinese food syndrome Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer GABA Inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA- like receptors may b involved in anxiety disorders Serotonin Not as widespread as glutamate and GABA; concentrated in hypothalamus and cortex Involved in sleep (It’s made from tryptophan, which is found in turkey) One of the neurotransmitters involved in depression LSD effects serotonin system Dopamine Not as widespread as glutamate and GABA; concentrated in basal ganglia and frontal lobes Back to Einstein Default action potentials and neurotransmitters (Different across individuals)
