I. Causes of the French Revolution a. Political i. The king was an absolute monarch ii. He exercised unlimited powers: made and enforced laws, conducted foreign affairs, dispensed justice and controlled finances iii. The king selected his ministers by noble birth or favoritism not ability iv. The king censored speech and press to smother “dangerous ideas” v. The king denied the people a voice in the government b. Social i. The French people were divided in to 3 distinct classes, called estates ii. 1 st estate was the clergy iii. 2 nd estate were the nobles iv. 3 rd estate was the rest of the population, the bourgeoisie v. 1 st and 2 nd estates were 3% of the population and were privileged classes vi. they owned most of the land vii. received exemption from most taxes viii. held the best army and government jobs ix. 3 rd estate was 97% of the population and were the unprivileged estate c. Economic i. All of the imposed taxes left the peasants with only ½ of their income ii. Louis XVI brings France to financial bankruptcy
