2 THE ROLE OF NURSING LEADERSHIP IN QUALITY Increasing awareness of the magnitude of leadership in healthcare has grown over the last decade. Within a healthcare organization, influential leaders are vital to maintain and direct a health care delivery system positively. Nursing leadership explicitly plays a significant role in pursuing the goals of healthcare quality and the Quadruple Aim, in more ways than meets the eye. Quadruple Aim and the pursuit of Improved Healthcare Quality Originally, "The Institute of Healthcare Improvement" developed the framework of Triple Aim in 2007, which aspires to improve the overall health of the population, enhance the experience of patient care, and lower the per capita cost of health care. Many organizations are setting a fourth aim of attaining joy, for example, while other organizations focus on varying priorities better suited to their framework, known as the Quadruple Aim ( Feeley, 2017). Along with the challenges of improving the population's overall health while lowering costs, there is the challenge of maintaining healthcare quality. Healthcare Quality is an ongoing effort in nearly every healthcare organization, with medical errors becoming the third leading cause of death in the United States (Makary & Daniel, 2016), there is an acknowledged issue to identify more effective and higher quality care among all professionals within the field. There are varying personal opinions among patients regarding what high-quality health care entails, which can skew feedback data from patients making it difficult to identify and take action (Allen-Duck et al., 2017). Without proper leadership, the quality of healthcare can significantly decline, creating an unsafe environment for patients as well as staff. Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs) have a primary focus on quality improvement as well as safety; it is not a supervisory role, but preferably one that involves overseeing the patient's care
