Felson was born on October 10, 1950 in Cincinnati, Ohio and is a husband and father of two children. Felson earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology at the University of Cincinnati with Honors in 1972, he decided to further his education by earning his Masters degree in Sociology at Indiana University in 1973 and then received his Ph.D. in Sociology at Indiana University in 1977. His main focus of study is centered on how gender and violence are connected.
