BIOL 237 Case History 1 A 27 year old man, who works outdoors, notices a growth on the skin which includes a darkly pigmented spot surrounded by a halo of inflamed skin. This man has a very fair complexion, with numerous freckles and blond hair. Because of his job and recreational interests he spends a great deal of time outdoors and often gets sunburned in the summer time. The pigmented spot was removed surgically and sent for biopsy. It was determined to be malignant, but there was no evidence of metastasis. 1. What is the most likely diagnosis of the condition described. Explain. He has a type of skin cancer. I believe it is basal cell carcinoma, since it is more common than other kinds like squamous carcinoma or melanoma. 2. Describe the normal histology of the epidermis which relates to this condition. The epidermis is the area of the skin that is the most directly affected by constant sun exposure and its UV rays. Even though the epidermis produces melanin to protect itself from these damaging rays, sometimes it is not enough.
