Chapter 10 I.D Quiz Group 1 Andrew Johnson was such an important figure of the time because he took over after the assassination of Lincoln with little to no preparation. Johnson is still studied today because he “was detested in the North and distrusted in the South.” Andrew being disliked as President helped him make his decisions without worrying about angering his cabinet or the Radicals. President Johnson maintained the course that Lincoln had set by not punishing the South to severely in fact only one southerner was executed for war crimes. Group 2 The thirteenth amendment was important at the time because it was a constitutional law that would abolish slavery in the United States for once and for all. The amendment is still studied today because it was one of Abraham Lincoln’s finest achievements and what the Civil war was fought over. With the thirteenth amendment Lincoln also was able to steer “the nation from a house divided over slavery to one reunited without it.” The amendment matters to us because it was our
