Amrit Gupta 1/30/08 Music 334 DOR #3- Answering Questions on Chou Chiener’s Article 1. The main issue that Chiener refers to in his article is investigating how a native researcher takes on the overall role of fieldwork and research. He does this by looking at some of his own experiences in Taiwan dealing with nanguan. Another important issue covered in this article is the coverage given to comparing the responsibilities that a native researcher has compared to a foreign researcher. 2. The music that has the highest reputation in Taiwan, according to the article, is nanguan which literally means “southern pipe” music. 3. According to Chiener, a native researcher is a term used for researchers who already have a lot of experience dealing with the music tradition that they are investigating. He also says that a synonymous term for a native researcher that would also fit this definition is “insider ethnomusicologist”. A non-native researcher is one who is not familiar with

The concept of bi-musicality has evolved in Taiwan in that the first generation was usually well versed in the Western musical tradition. In the second generation, however, bi-musicality has evolved because students can now learn nanguan without knowing the Western musical tradition, but still knowing other styles of music. 5. Chiener states that the advantages of being a native researcher include being familiar with the language at hand, knowing the local customs, having contacts, and generally not being lost in terms of communication and mannerisms. However, one disadvantage of being a native researcher includes having to deal with the dual identity and responsibility of being a native researcher as well as being a fellow musician.
