Studying the Past Archaeology - the scientific study of the material remains of past human cultures and behavior Taphonomy - the scientific study of the burial and deposition of bone and assemblages Ecofacts - organic remains which are used by or affected by people (ex: plant remains, animal bones, pollen grains) Artifacts - the portable products and by-products of human behavior Feature - non-portable artifacts Site – a cluster of artifacts, ecofacts and features Region – a large cluster of archaeological data often define in terms of geography like a river valley (temporally related archeological data) Pompeii Premise – ( exception rather than the rule) frozen moments in time like this never happen Context the context you find things in o Provenience – 3D location (x,y,z coordinates) o Matrix – lay it’s found in (sediment) o Association – things found around it Stratigraphy – a branch of geology which studies rock layers (strata) and layering (stratification) Absolute Dating Techniques – numerical dating, to give rocks or radioactive decay an actual date, in number of years (ex. Radiometric dating) Collapse – a rapid decrease (within a period of a generation) in a population size and socio-political complexity Biology and evolution Evolution - change in the heritable traits of biological populations over successive generations. Evolutionary Theory - loosely defined, evolution means change through time. We are specifically concerned with origins. Progressive evolution (Herbert Spencer) - evolution proceeds in direction from simple to complex o Thought humans are most complex, thus most evolved (wrong) Lamarckian Evolution (Jean-Baptiste Lamarck) - thought evolution could happen in lifetime (wrong) o Ex. Thought Giraffe mom needed to get to a taller tree → grew a long neck in her lifetime and gave it to baby (not true - you can only pass down genes)
