People like to explain events, and they have many ways to frame them: as natural, as acts of god, as personal choices, etc. O People often disagree about the cause of any one event. O Example: O The deaths of Susan Smith’s kids, October 1994, John Long Lake, South Carolina Smith’s insanity O Symptom of child abuse, O … or inherited disease O Smith’s rational decision O Wish to keep the boyfriend O Work of a bad person O Supernatural power over Smith O The devil made her do it. O God called the boys home. Group activities around Smith O the Democrats O A combination of: O men’s relative disinterest in raising other men’s kids O young single mothers’ sense of economic dependence O the stigma of poverty O Filicide as suicide O Revenge: family killing O Altruism: a better life Most people, most of the time, employ the individual frame, which makes sociology counterintuitive. O Sociologists can believe in the validity of all frames in our daily lives, but we discipline ourselves to focus on the sociological as we do our work.
