2 Darius the Great Who is Darius and How Did He Become King? Darius the first, (aka. Darius the Great), was the third ruler of Persia during the Achaemenid dynasty, (a family that had ruled for over 200 years). He was recognized for being the king at Persia’s peak. Darius was born in 550 B.C and died in 486 B.C. While Darius was not born the son of a king, he was the son of a satrap of Persia, (a person who leads under the king who ruled a land). So how did Darius become king if he was not born into a family of rulers? Darius himself says that after Persians ruler ‘Cambyses’ was away in battle, another man named Gautama appeared and began to call himself ‘Bardiya’ and told the people of Persia to rebel against their king. Darius knew this man was an imposter as he led a group of people to kill Gautama. In the meantime, Persians actual leader, (Cambyses), died. This is the point where Darius says he took over the throne of Persia. According to Greek Historians, Darius gained the thrown in a much less heroic way. Historians say that Darius was one of many Persian elites who came together to find a new leader after Cambyses had passed. These elites were each represented by their horses, and whoever’s horse was to neigh first, would be the new king. Darius’s foolery caused him to become king. Darius had found a female horse and rubbed his hand over her genitals right before the ceremony. During the ceremony, Darius rubbed that same
