Hemolysis Test (SPRING 2018 version) Introduction Hemolysis, the enzymatic breakdown of red blood cells, is performed by a variety of bacteria (especially among the Gram-positive cocci). Hemolytic ability spans the continuum from β -hemolysis (complete clearing of the agar) to α -hemolysis (partial clearing of the agar) to no hemolysis (no change in the coloration of the agar). Results β = Complete clearing of the blood red coloration in agar immediately surrounding growth/colonies. These organisms are potentially pathogenic. α = Partial clearing of the blood red coloration in the agar immediately surrounding growth/colonies (NOTE: sometimes partial hemolysis actually shows as greenish coloration/darkening of the agar). - = No change in agar immediately surrounding growth/colonies (also known as gamma hemolysis, γ ).
