Week 1 Thermoregulation Humans have spent majority of time in warmer, tropical climates We have very efficient cooling system, but not an early warming alert system Homeostasis- boy wants to be 98.6 Food and water- during digestion, over 60% derived from food is in the form of ‘heat energy’ When there’s heat loss and conservation, which come with constriction and dilation Alcohol- creates cold vasodilation of the extremities (in veins), really makes people colder Tobacco-vasoconstrictor, inhibits circulation Head and cylinders(fingers and toes) and heat loss- hard to keep head warm due to high surface area with small internal area 3 heating mechanisms Basal metabolism-maintains core temperature, varies between individuals, age(lose 2% per decade after 20 years) ,and can be increased up to 5X during cold stress Exercise-lots of heat in short amount of time Shivering-can increase heat production 5X, uses energy of slow jog
