Santos 1 Lucas Santos Mrs. Schuster AP Literature 5 February 2020 The Landlady Essay In “The Landlady”, the poet, P.K. Page illustrates the intense thoughts that are running through a landlady’s mind. She wishes to know everything about her tenants to the point where her actions are obsessive and predatory, although her renters are oblivious to her actions and thoughts. Through the use of imagery, selection of detail, and tone, Page effectively portrays the switch from caring to excessively obsessed behavior that the lady shows regarding her tenants. At the beginning of the poem, Page utilizes imagery to introduce how the landlady acts around the guests of her house. The author writes that there is a “craving silence swallowing her speech” (3), which shows that the lady struggles to find the words to say to people, so she just stays silent. This could mean that she is socially awkward, which would explain some of her uncomfortable behavior towards the guests. In line 7, the landlady is described to
