1 J A P N 1 0 1 1 INTRODUCTION to JAPANESE STUDIES Semester 2, 2017 Department of Japanese Studies, SMLC University of Hong Kong This course is designed as an introduction to the Department of Japanese Studies and different areas of expertise. It is a prerequisite for the Major in Japanese Studies and the Minor in Japanese Culture. Our goal is to introduce students to key topics and methodologies in the field of Japanese Studies. The course comprises four modules: 1. Premodern History, 2. Modern History, 3. Film and Literature, and 4. Contemporary Japan. Students will not only learn about Japan, but also learn how to analyse it critically. By the end of the course, students should have a broad understanding of Japan and the different approaches and questions posed by some of the diverse disciplines that make up Japanese Studies.
