CEE 431 Problem Set 4 Winter 2006 (Due: 10:30 AM, Wednesday, Feb. 8, in class) In this problem set, you will be considering two horizontal (East-West) ground motions that were measured during the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 19 th , 1989. The epicenter of this earthquake (M= 6.9, Ms=7.1) was located in the Santa Cruz mountains south of San Francisco. The Treasure Island site is located on an artificial fill, underlain by soft sediments of bay mud. The site has USGS site classification D, which means that it has a shear wave velocity to a depth of 30m of less than 180 m/s. The distance closest to fault rupture has been estimated as 82.9 km. The Yerba Buena island site is located nearby on a natural rock outcrop, with a USGS site classification of A, which means that the shear wave velocity exceeds 750 m/s. The distance closest to fault rupture has been estimated as 80.6 km. Problem 1. a)
