Taxon (pl taxa)- theory and practice of classifying organisms Linnaeus- founder of modern classification system designed binomial nomenclature Ernst Mayer- scientist of evolutionary biology Monophyletic group: includes an ancestral species and all of its descendents Paraphyletic group: a group that contains a common ancestor and some but not all of its descendents Polyphletic group: consists of several evolutionary lines that do not share the same recent common ancestor Kingdom Protista: Amoebas Changes shapes – movement, phagocytosis – pseudopodia Reproduces by binary fission (asexual) Some form tests (shells) Parasitic amoebas -causes serious human intestinal diseases -cyst stage -contaminated drinking water Foraminiferans Marine organisms Produce shells or tests Resemble microscopic snails Dead forms: white cliffs of Dover Oil deposits Radiolarians Shell glass-like Axopods functioning and feeding Dead: sediment on ocean floor Flagellates Flagellum (sometimes more than one) Some free-living other symbiotic Many are parasitic Parasitic to humans –Ex: trypanosome gambiense
