Faculty members work a 40-hour week and rotate jobs each week. Mr. Rockness has been working on a contract from General Eclectic, which require delivery of 2,000 refurbished students per week. A representative of the human resources department has just called complaining that the company hasn t been receiving the agreed-upon number of students. A check of finished goods inventory by Mr. Rockness reveals that there is no stock left. What is going on? Max Capacity = 40 hrs x 60 mins = 2400 minutes 2400/students 1 minute unpack, place on belt 1600/students 1.5 strip bad habits 3000/students .8 scrub/clean 2400/students 1 insert 2000/students 1.2 polish Bottleneck: Least capacity in process = STEP 2 Process cannot create > what bottleneck is, so 1600 is max capacity for process as a whole. Between steps 1 and 2, 800 students backed up. Cooper s Copy Shop is considering two different processes for completing copying jobs brought in by customers. Process A uses one person to setup the job and do the copying. If this approach is used, an experienced person can complete an average of 20 jobs per day. Process B uses two people. One person does the setup and the second person does the actual copying. Setup on one job can be done while copying is being completed on another but copying must be completed on a job before the copying machine can start copying the next. After some practice, this second process can be completed with a standard time of 10 minutes for setup and 15 minutes for actual copying. In either case, assume an 8 hour day, 5 days per week, 250 days per year. 8 hour days 5 days a week = 250 days/yr 40 hours/week x 60 = 240 minutes/week a. Assuming ideal conditions, what is the maximum capacity of Process B? 240/ (10minutes setup + 15 minutes copy) = 9.6
