College Algebra (SU09-MATH10-0312) S. Cotteen SECTION 1.2: MODELING WITH EQUATIONS 1. Making And Using Models (No notes from this section) 2. Problems About Interest a. Simple Interest – annual percentage of the total amount. b. Simple Interest Formula: Interest = (Principle)(Rate)(Time) i. Special Note: Rate must be a decimal. ii. Example: An investment of \$100,000 in two certificates, one at 6% and one at 4.5% simple interest annually. If the total interest is \$5025 per year, find the amount invested in each certificate. x = amount invested at 6%. 100,000 – x = amount invested at 4.5%. ( x )(.06) + (100,000 – x )(.045) = 5025 .06 x + (4500 – .045 x ) = 5025 .015 x = 525 x = 35,000 (amount at 6%) 100,000 – x = 65,000 (amount at 4.5%) 3. Problems About Area or Length a. Example: Given a square garden with a 3 foot walkway around the outer edge. The area of the entire garden, including the walkway is 18,000 ft 2 . Find the dimensions of the planted area. x
