OCT 2007 KONA IRONMAN Ironman: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a grueling 26.2 mile run. No stops, no breaks, this is one continuous race. The first Ironman was held in Hawaii in 1978 only four years after the first official triathlon was ever held. The Ironman began as a bet between a group of sailors to see which sport out of the three, running, biking, and swimming was the most enduring. 16 entered the first race to compete for the title of “ironman” However only 12 finished. The winning time was eleven hours and forty-six minutes and fity-eight seconds, completed by Gordon Haller. Today the top male athletes are finishing this same race in just over eight hours (8:11:56). The most prestigious of all Ironman competitions is held in Kona, Hawaii. Desiree Ficker, the 2006 Ironman runner up states, “the best part about Kona is the beauty of the island” and the “gorgeous adventure” one gets to experience. This October the next Kona, Hawaii Ironman will be held. The best triathletes in the world will be there
