Journal 5 “Using the same conservative formula, one could say those two hundred went on to infect a thousand, the thousand five thousand, the five thousand twenty-five thousand. Under the California desert and subsidized by the taxpayers’ money, someone had finally invented a chain letter that really worked. A very lethal chain letter” This excerpt from Stephen King’s “The Stand ” which describes the spread of the lethal man-made virus is unnerving enough. But the author goes on to add a human component to those numbers. He describes how a large number of people get infected through seemingly innocent means. Infecting someone by leaving a dollar tip, by asking someone directions or by just being next to someone. The author names a lot of people of people trying to enforce how easy it were for a normal person like you and me to get infected. How he started with Harry Trent and how many people he infected, then suddenly switching over to Edward M. Norris and his family whom Harry Trent infected and how many people they infected.
