Journal 8 The doomsday virus described in Stephen King’s “ The Stand” created an unlikely twosome, a deaf mute and a mentally challenged man. Their names were Nick Andros and Tom Cullen. In the beginning Nick considered abandoning Tom but decided otherwise and took Tom along in his trip to Nebraska. It turned out to be a wise decision; Tom saved his life from a tornado. Tom saw the tornado before Nick and led him to safety. Tom might have slowed down Nick but he turned out to be a worthy companion in their situation. In situations like that it may be easy to disregard a retarded person or even a deaf mute. Tough decisions have to be made and a wrong decision could prove fatal. In hindsight Nick seemed to have made all right decisions by allowing Tom to tag along and disallowing Julie Lawry to do the same. He deduced that an emotionally unstable person like Julie could very well hinder his chances of survival. There are multiple instances in the book where characters are required to make decisions,
