OSA: Content Creative / Critical Thinking What is it? The ability and willingness to evaluate different perspectives and challenge assumptions. 3 levels of creative / critical thinking: 1. Dualistic thinking (the lowest) Black or white, Yes or no, True or false, Boy or girl Strengths: simple, know where they stand. Weaknesses: close minded, stubborn, “deaf,” frightening. 2. Combination / Combinatorial thinking (middle ground, mediators) Find a 3 rd way to a situation. Strengths: help to satisfy both sides. Weaknesses: indecisive, “wishy/washy,” “monkey in the middle.” 3. Transcendent thinking (the highest) Transcend – rise above Strengths: remind everyone that issues are complex, “big picture thinkers.” Weaknesses: profound flakiness, miss the simplicity of the situation, way out in left field if big picture goes wrong. All writing is in one way or another is an effort to PERSUADE an AUDIENCE . Always address towards the reader/audience, the audience is everything . 3 primary ways to persuade: 1. Logic and Reason (best) Strengths: minds respond favourably to it. Weaknesses: illogical/unreasonable -> faulty logic. 2. Appeal to Credibility (needed) Strengths: backs up case, with external sources. Weaknesses: source may not be credible to audience. 3.
