Simple Arithmetic Average
– AVERAGE
The simple arithmetic average can be calculated using Excel's AVERAGE function. See
the table below for a detailed list of the exercises and problems in the text that can be
solved using this function.

General Example
The following general example shows how the AVERAGE function can be used. Notice
that the AVERAGE function appears in the formula bar.

To calculate the arithmetic average of a group of values, create a spreadsheet by
following Steps 1 to 6. Or, to use the AVERAGE function right away, open the
AVERAGE worksheet in the Excel Functions Templates workbook.
Step 1
: Enter Average Function in cell A1. You will replace Average Function with your
project title when you use the spreadsheet for a particular question or situation.
Step 2
: Leave cells A2 to A8 empty. You will place labels in these cells later.
Step 3
: Click on cell C8 to select that cell. To place the AVERAGE function in cell C8,
click the Paste Function button

on the Toolbar. In the Function Category list,
click on
All
. In the Function Name list, click on
AVERAGE
, then click
OK
.
