What do sport sociologists actually do?
Origins in the Field in Academia - Two major organizations (NASSS and ISSA) started “to promote, stimulate, and encourage the sociological study of play, games, sport and contemporary physical culture” in 1980 and 1965 respectively - All kinds of academic journals, conferences and books have been written in the discipline - Sociology of sport classes and socio-cultural dimensions of sport in kinesiology programs are really popular Social Construction - Any idea or practice that a group of people agree exists - Maintained over time by people taking its existence for granted - What people think and do are products of culture and history - Religion, race, gender, social class, money Microstructures - Microstructures are intimate, face-to-face social interactions with, for example, friends, family, work colleagues, teachers, and coaches and how they influence society. These are small groups such as a curling foursome, bowling team, or the board of a children’s soccer league. People participate in microstructures for personal reasons and because they “tend to be emotionally deep and enduring” Macrostructures
- Macrostructures are larger than microstructures and represent social relations that occur outside a person’s inner circle. In this course, we will be concerned primarily with macrostructures, focusing on the relationship of sport to institutions such as education, politics, and the media. Inequities in sport as a result of sex, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status will be the focus in other chapters. Global Structures - Global structures, which are larger than macrostructures, are relations between nations, cultures, and societies. For example, as a result of advancements in transportation and communication, sport has globalized. Even though the world’s population is growing at an alarming rate, as a result of advancements in transportation and communication our world has, in fact, shrunk. Sociological Imagination - Sociology is the scientific study of the connection between the individual and social structure - Sociology examines the underlying patterns in human behaviour and our relationships with one another - C. Wright Mills (1959) coined the term the sociological imagination Power via Agency and Structure -
