SILURIAN PERIOD When was this ? What is this? The Silurian the start of significant life on (wet, dry ) land. The Silurian saw the first (seed-producing, vascular ) plant fossils. The Silurian saw the wide and rapid spread of ( ray- finned, lobe-finned, jawless ) fishes The Silurian saw the first extensive ( sponge, coral ) reefs.

The Silurian System was named in the 1830s by English geologist Sir Roderick Murchison who had been studying the fossil-bearing rocks in southern ( Scotland, Wales ). Murchison noticed that Silurian rocks appeared to be distinct the younger (higher) rocks of the (Devonian Cambrian ). Murchison gave this geological time the name Silurian after the (Sillers, Silures ), an ancient Celtic tribe that lived on the Welsh-English border. What two types of fossils are shown here?
