6.02 Spring 2008 2 of 16 Lab #4 Goal: Understanding of the binary symmetric model abstraction of a digital modulation communication link. Exploration of the relationship between signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER). Calculations to relate the two metrics and Matlab experiments to verify the calculations. An example exercise dealing with an asymmetric model and its implications. Instructions: 1. Complete the entire pre-lab before the lab on Wednesday, October 10. Please turn in requested answers to the pre-lab on the sheet provided at the end of this document at the beginning of the lab session. 2. Complete the activities for Wednesday’s lab (see below) and get checked off by one of the TAs. Please work either in pairs while in lab. 3. Get a post-lab interview from the staff.

Background For the lab exercises to follow, we now turn our attention to the approximation of a digital communication link as a binary symmetric channel.
