1) Give the significance of the following terms. Say what they do or why they are important. (1 pt each) A) Hydropathy Plot Hydropathy plots are calculated via a computer program that is designed to identify clusters of hydrophobic amino acids. Hydropathy plots are important in order to assist us in predicting membrane – across segments or areas that are most likely to be exposed on the surface of proteins and thus more than likely antigenic. B) Membrane potential Membrane potential can also be referred to as the voltage difference between the interior and the exterior of the cell. The inside of the cell is negatively charged whereas the outside of the cell is positively charged and this communication between the inside and the outside of the cell has a value. This value is the membrane potential and this value can be calculated via the Nerst Equation: This value is of importance in order for us to determine the value of the potential required to prevent diffusion. From the equation above we know that the greater this ratio is the greater the tendency for the ion to diffuse towards one direction. 2) Compare and contrast the following A) Membrane lipid mobility vs. membrane protein mobility
