TO: Next Year’s AP Calculus Students FROM: Mrs. Stevens, AP Calculus Teacher There are certain skills that you have learned over the previous years that are essential to your success in AP Calculus. If you do not have these skills, you will find that you may consistently get problems incorrect this year, even though you understand the calculus concepts. It is frustrating for students when the algebra or trigonometry, and not the calculus, trips them up. This attached summer homework packet is intended for you to review/refresh these topics. Very important: DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR PRECALCULUS NOTES! You will turn in the packet the first day of Calculus class, and it will count as a daily grade. During the first week of school, you will take a test on the material in the packet. My recommendation is that you look over the problems in the packet when you receive it but that you wait until the third or fourth week of July to work the problems so that you will remember the material very well when school starts. All problems should have been covered in your Precal class this past year, so use your notes as needed to review. Email me at [email protected] if you need additional review notes on a topic (I will send you some in a return email). We will be using the TI-84 and TI-89 Titanium graphing calculators in AP Calculus. The school owns TI- 89 calculators that we will “check out” to students as needed, or you may purchase your own (recommended if you will be taking other advanced math courses in college). A TI-89 costs around $150. The price fluctuates, so you should compare the prices at various places before purchasing one. You can buy a TI-89 at stores such as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, and Staples, as well as from online sites like Amazon.
