Instructor: Madelyn E Logan e-mail: [email protected] Number of Credits: 4 credits Prerequisites: BIO 101 or BIO 124 Corequisites: None Course Description: The course is an introduction to the basic principles of ecology. It includes population genetics, biodiversity, species interactions, energy cycles and a brief coverage of the major biomes. The laboratory is closely aligned with the lecture materials and includes some fieldwork. Required Materials: The Living World by Johnson and Losos, fifth edition - McGraw-Hill Computer with reliable connection to the internet Course Rationale: This course provides a logical progression from the cell and genetics in BIO 101. The course illustrates how these basic principles are responsible for biodiversity. It explores the interrelationship between organisms that exists in ecosystems and it will help students better understand their environment. Course Objectives: After completion of this course, the student should be able to begin to understand the relationship between all living things develop an appreciation and understanding of the natural world in which we live illustrate the relationship between genetics and the phenotypes of a population develop a basic understanding of the role evolution plays in the diversity within species and speciation
