Unformatted text preview: Baroque Music Period 1600-1750 • The three significant composers of the Baroque Music Period are: • 1 Antonio Vivaldi 1678-1741 • 2. Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750 • 3. George Frideric Handel 1685-1759 • Bach’s death marks the end of the Baroque Music Period. • Divided into three phases • early 1600-1640, • Middle 1640-1680, and • late 1680-1750. • Baroque music is best known from the late phase. • In Italy, music was composed for texts conveying extreme emotion. The text ruled the music. With this stress on drama and text, it is not surprising that Italian composers of the early baroque created opera. • Late baroque period emphasized polyphonic texture . • During the middle phase of the period, the new musical style spread from Italy to practically every country in Europe. • A feature of middle baroque phase was the new importance of instrumental music. • Many compositions were written for specific instruments, the violin family being the most popular. Characteristics of Baroque Music • Unity of Mood • A piece usually expresses one basic mood . • If it begins joyful, it will remain joyful throughout. • Continuity of rhythm ....
