Throughout the Baroque period, music students flocked to Venice to study and compose music, and the public to hear it. Several of the best living conductors studied at the Venice conservatory , and the city remains today an important center of new music composition.

Monteverdi undeniably the most gifted composer alive anywhere in Europe . He secured a position in Venice by submitting a set of Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary (published 1610). He had advanced a secular form of music entertainment called opera. Monteverdi served the church with dignity, but his chief importance to Venice was that owing to his presence it became one of the principal centers of music drama for 200 years.

Opera. This new medium had grown out of deliberations of a gathering of Intellectuals from Florence who called themselves a camerata ("band of Comrades").
