October 10; Lecture #6; Quiz #1: Name 2 of the 4 natural disasters that can trigger tsunami Any combination of the following four is acceptable: 1. earthquakes (normal/reverse/thrust) 2. volcanic eruptions (explosive or collapse) 3. landslides (incl: submarine landslides, slides into water, collapse of ice shelf) 4. impact of extra-terrestrial object (incl: asteroids, meteorites, comets, space debris) NB: tsunami are generated only if: o events are huge and o events involve ocean or similar body of water Hurricanes do not trigger tsunami. The physical mechanism of storm surges generated by hurricanes is similar to that of wind- or storm-generated waves. The wavelength and amplitude of the waves grow with the area over which the wind blows and the duration over which the wind blows consistently. This takes a long time (many hours to weeks). A tsunami-generating event happens suddenly.
