BIEB 150 Evolution Fall 2001 MIDTERM 22 nd October, 2001 Name……………………………. 1 Points total is out of 100. Please show all working, to ensure partial credit. Regrades are only possible if you use ink. No notes should be out. Best of luck. 1. (4pts) Why is it most often the males rather than the females of a species that are brightly colored, or carry extravagant weapons? 2. (4pts) In moose, a male may monopolize up to 20 females for several years. Antlers can weigh over 70lbs, and fights are so serious that loss of control over the females is often accompanied by death. Why would selection favor a male that will fight to death, rather than retreat? 3. (4pts) Some species of snails are hermaphrodites, with each snail inseminating the other during mating. Supposing one was to conduct an experiment where snails were held in monogamous pairs for life, and over generations selected for increased egg production. Do you think the amount of sperm produced by the snails would go up, down, or stay the same? Explain. 4. (5pts) The red queen hypothesis: "you see Alice, it takes all my running to stay in the same place" has been applied to host-parasite co-evolution. Explain the relevance of this hypothesis to the maintenance of sex.
