Not all concepts will be covered in class – you are responsible for
all material in the reading and in the homework problems.
Problems:
1.
Three identical masses of 500 kg each are
placed on the xaxis. One mass is at
x = 10cm, one is at the origin and one is at
x = 40cm. What is the net gravitational force
(magnitude and direction) on the mass at the
origin, due to the other two masses?
2.
Teams from two dormitories, East and
West, are having a tugofwar, pulling on
opposite halves of a rope of negligible mass
and weight.
In this problem "Team East"
means all their members + their half of the
rope (total mass M
E
), while "Team West"
means all their members + their half of the
rope (total mass M
W
).

Draw two carefully labeled freebody diagrams
showing the forces acting on "Team East" and those
acting on "Team West."
You may treat each team as a
particle.
Please identify each force by its interaction
type and the body providing it. Use the notation
introduced in class.
