Types of work teams Dynamics of work teams and managing work teams Work team A small number of people with complementary skills who hold themselves mutually  accountable for pursuing a common purpose, achieving performance goals, and  improving interdependent work processes. o Work processes can be sequential (e.g. assembly line), pooled (…),  interdependent (…) o Teams increase risk b/c individuals in a team relinquish control. Then why join  teams? B/c the tasks themselves are inherently risky and require you to react  flexibly and quickly (possible through teamwork) The advantages of teams Teams improve  customer satisfaction   o Customer centered teams Teams improve  product and service quality   o Process-centered teams Teams improve  job satisfaction   o Cross-training – learning other jobs o Empowerment – sense of control over oneself Teams can improve  decision making   o Diversity of viewpoints
