AEM 3350: International Marketing of Biotechnology January 27, 2008 Agriculture scenario in India World’s second largest food producer – food production accounts for 26% of GDP &  60% of employment Growth around 4% Possesses 169 million hectares of arable land. Compared to 188 million hectares in the  whole of Asia east of India, including China Produces 601 million tons of food almost equal to the US’s 608 million tons China – World’s leading producer of food, achieved on just 60% of the land area in India India rates low in a number of areas as far as inputs and technology are concerned –  compare to US’s productivity over land area and labor Artificially low food prices b/c of gov’t controls leads to perpetually vicious cycle of  constant low productivity, low wages, and few opportunities for social mobility Fruits and vegetables
