Amrit Gupta 6/8/09 Assignment One for Immune Physiology 1. The point of vaccination is to provide immunity against a disease. The idea behind vaccination is to use a part of the infectious agent so that even though there is decreased virulence in this situation, the immunogenicity is still there in this situation. 2. There are four issues that are involved in general in achieving global vaccine- based eradication programs. These four issues are that the infection be limited to human beings, that there must be constant antigenic properties in the case of viral infections, that the virus does not keep up in the infected host, and that there should be an effective vaccine. One reason that some diseases are no longer seen in the Americas but are still present in some other countries is seen in the case of poliomyelitis. The vaccine for this is capable of breaking down in conditions of heat, several doses are needed, in some cases paralysis can result, and there is no way of knowing if the vaccination has been a successful one.
