Chapter 10 Photosynthesis The Process That Feeds the Biosphere 1. Autotrophic nutrition is composed of water and minerals from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air. Heterotrophic nutrition is composed of plants, other animals, and oxygen, a by-product of photosynthesis. 2. Photoautotrophs are organisms that use light as a source of energy to synthesize organic substances. Chemoautotrophs oxidize inorganic substances for energy. 3. Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis in plants. It has an outer membrane, intermembrane space, and an inner membrane. Its compartments are the thylakoid, granum, and stroma. The Pathways of Photosynthesis 4. The summary equation for photosynthesis is: 5. 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Light energy C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 6. The process of photosynthesis involves redox reactions. Water is split and electrons are transferred along with hydrogen ions from the water to carbon dioxide, reducing it to sugar. The electrons increase in potential energy as they move from water to sugar, thus redox reactions are needed since this process requires energy. This energy boost is provided by light. 7. The two main stages of photosynthesis are the light reactions and the Calvin cycle. The light reactions are the steps of photosynthesis that converts solar energy to chemical energy. The Calvin cycle produces the sugar during photosynthesis. 8. An action spectrum profiles the relative effectiveness of different wavelengths of radiation driving a process. An absorption spectrum plots a pigment’s light absorption versus wavelength. The action spectrum for photosynthesis differs from the absorption spectrum for chlorophyll
