NOTES SECTION ELEVEN: Slides 5-6: Thus far the following components from the outline have been discussed: the introduction of the main theme and the letter, the theological development of the main theme, and the historical development of the main theme. However, Paul did not just set out to provide the Christians in Rome with a lesson on faith and theology. In other words: FAITH AND THEOLOGY MUST COME TO EXPRESSION IN DAILY CHRISTIAN LIVING. Slide 7: Far too often, Christians read chapters 12 through 15 as if it was written to them in their own context in the twenty-first century. Certainly, as inspired Scripture Romans chapters 12 through 15 can in principle be applied to our lives. However they too—just like chapters 1-11 and 16—must be understood within their socio-cultural context and only THEN can be applied to the here and now. Thus de socio-historical context become the matrix against which Christians today understand and obey the Word of God and the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit I daily Christian living. However, the literary context of the letter to the Romans is of utmost importance. Unto now, Paul has discussed how one can be made righteous, who can be made righteous, and how this making righteous reflects on the history and future of Israel. Yet all of this discussion would be useless if no feet were put to these words. Thus in Romans 12-15 Paul takes the concept of righteousness and makes it practical in daily life in the first-century Christian church in Rome. Slide 8: Paul starts out the practical challenge and application of his argument by strongly appealing to the Roman Christians that they consecrate themselves. At this point it becomes apparent that the social structure of the church is part of the struggle of the Christians. Who gets to do what and who ranks where? Who is more honorable? Who is of highest status? Could a slave be in a position of leadership and hence potentially have authority over his or her master within the church? Who gets the biggest piece of the pie? Gentile leadership or Jewish leadership? In other words: how is the culture and social structure of the world represented or not represented within the body of Christ? Paul immediately takes off the former focus and redirects the discussion to the use of spiritual gifts. The result of the proper us of the gifts should result in love within and outside the Christian community. Slide 9:
