COMD 2050 FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE CHAPTER 13 (14) Aphasia o An impairment of language function due to localized brain damage which leads to difficulty in all language modalities to varying degrees which include: Production of language Comprehension Reading Writing Different types of aphasia characteristics and location of damage in brain to cause that aphasia o Broca’s aphasia Slow, effortful, non-fluent speech Damage in left hemisphere, front o Wernicke’s aphasia Fluent speech but does not make sense Speech likely to contain neologisms (nonsense words) Damage in rear, temporal lobe Lobes of the brain: know basic information about each one. (Don’t forget about the insula) o Frontal Lobe Starts in the front, just behind the forehead, and goes almost halfway back to the back of the head It sends the motor commands to the muscles of your body that cause movement The frontal lobe is important for personality, planning, and decision making o Parietal Lobe Starts behind the frontal lobe It processes most of the sensory memory information from the body Pain Temperature Touch

Sense of body position o Occipital Lobe In the back of the brain It is responsible mainly for vision o Temporal Lobe The extension along the side of the brain. It underlies the ear It is important for hearing and the processing of both auditory and visual input o Insula hidden lobe of the brain emotion Types of slips of the tongue o Spoonerism a speech error resulting from an exchange of phonemes or words within a phrase Exchange of word-initial sounds Exchange of word-final sounds Repetition of speech sounds o Carryover/perseverative/L to R slip o Anticipatory/R to L slip Understand Genie and critical period for language o Genie’s story came out in 1970. o First 13 years of her life tied to a chair in a dark room and was beaten if she made any noises, so she did not acquire any language. o Dichotic listening test: strong left-ear advantage for language o Rehab programs for training R hemispheres of people with aphasia due to L hemisphere stroke to take over language functions, but they have mixed results Dichotic listening tasks o These tests are based on the fact that just like the L hemisphere of the brain controls the R half of the body, information heard by the R ear goes primary to the L hemisphere o Both the sensory and motor pathways are crossed o Right-ear advantage for language

o Left-ear advantage for processing non-linguistic sounds o Studies have shown that almost all of us are better at repeating what is said to the R ear than what is said to the L ear Right and left hemisphere o Right hemisphere Goes to left hand Music, spatial orientation, creativity o Left hemisphere Goes to right hand Spoken language, number skills, written language, reasoning Stroke o 3 rd leading killer in the US o 700,000 Americans have a stroke each year
