INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE COMD  class meeting time :    Wednesdays 3:10-6:00 AM;            5 Lockett instructor : Meghan Collins:  [email protected]  Office: 225.578.3572     office hours:  Tuesdays  1:00 PM – 2:00 PM or by appointment office location:  71 Hatcher Hall (basement) course description :  This course is an introductory analysis of linguistic study.  Specifically, we  will follow language from its inherent beginnings, historically and anatomically.  We will study the  principals of language structure:  phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.  Furthermore, this course will explore topics such as regional, social, and cultural variations in  language. course objectives :  The students will: attain an understanding of language processes in an objective, analytical, and unbiased  manner. develop a working knowledge of the structure of the English language, including speech  sounds, sound patterns, morphemes, phrases, clauses, and sentences. gain an understanding of the various functions of language. demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomical and neurological bases of speech  and language production, as well as several neurological language disorders. develop an unbiased view of different languages and cultures, various social and  geographical dialects, and bilingualism. textbook :   Yule, G. (2006).  The Study of Language  (3 rd  Ed.).  Cambridge:  Cambridge  University Press. ISBN:  0-521-54320-7 Moodle:   This course will heavily utilize Moodle provided by Louisiana State University  Information Technology Services.  You can logon via your PAWS account.  If you are unfamiliar  with Moodle or experience any difficulty with use during the semester, I encourage you to check  out ITS’s website, or schedule a time to speak with me.  Moodle is new to the university and we  will be learning it together, so a little patience may be in order.   Spring 2009 1

INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE COMD  additional readings :  Occasionally additional readings will be provided on  Moodle  as PDFs;  these readings will be assigned   throughout the course of the semester as possible fulfillment for  in-class participation, in-class discussion, extra point assignments, or quizzes.  The students will  be notified in class, via email, and through Moodle when additional readings are to be printed
