Introduction Objective: According to Newton’s Second law an object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. If F is the net force, and if m is the mass of the object, then the acceleration is given by a=F/m, more familiar to us as F=ma. The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to verify Newton’s Second Law. Theory: a1 = a2= a a = a1 = a2 = acceleration (m/s^2) F1= m1*g – T = m1*a1 m1: hanging mass (kg); g: acceleration of the gravity (m/s^2) F2= T- f = m2*a2 m2: the weight of the cart (kg); T: pulling force of the string (N); t: the opposite force of the pulling force (N). = * = + + Fapplied m1 g m1 m2a f a = - - v2 v1t2 t1 a: common acceleration (m/s^2) v1,v2: velocity measured at photo gate 1 and 2, respectively (m/s). T1,t2: time measured at photo gate 1 and 2, respectively (s).
