Group Review Wednesday 8:00 @ the Union Theory Review for Final The Weberian Typology of Social Action (Four types) 1. Instrumentally Rational Action : Seen in Rational Choice; Purpose of actions; Social actors have ends and calculate means to arrive at those ends; Purpose of element—Modern is taken over by institutions = Bureaucracy Impersonal; Permanent organization that is divided by people but the goal is common—Division of Labor is present but its all organized to reach a goal most efficiently EX: Stock broker—Trying to make Money; Military—Trying to win wars 2. Value-Rational Action : Action to assume the use of reason; action itself is an end in itself; You do what you do no matter the consequence—The action itself have value; Choosing values and following them no matter the consequence EX: Artist; they will create art no matter what; even if they don’t sell it! 3. Affective Action : Undertaken when you’re in a strong emotional state and you yield to it; can be generated by in a rational fashion; Similar to collective effervescence; The state of mind is not permanent EX: Crying; you can cry on queue when your mind enters the state in which is sad 4. Traditional Action : Undertaken almost as a habit; you do what you do because that is how you do it EX: College: you go to college after high school because everyone in your family did and that is just the next step As society progresses, Instrumentally Rational Routinization of Charisma Arises in times of Crisis- This means that a leader dies—Someone takes over and continues to fulfill the duties; For example Civil Rights even though he didn’t have it he followed it ****This one I don’t have much info for please fill in for me****

Traditional Authority : King over subjects; Pre-modern; Legitimacy of king comes from tradition—One may dislike the king but the sacred quality of political monarchy makes them follow it; There is no rational thinking—Impersonal 2. Charismatic Authority : They don’t represent anything—It’s completely personal; Emerge out of nothing proposing a new way— New system; Create new orders; There is no rational action—You just let yourself go EX: Charles Manson (Any cult leaders) 1.Rational –Legal Authority : Modern; Corporations have over their employee’s or those who work for them; Bureaucracy—It’s impersonal and you take orders from institutions because they are legally legitimate; Taking your part for collective effort; Replacement. Hitler from Germany: Germany was in an economic crisis; He came to power out of nothing Obama: US state of Crisis—Charisma (Very personal relationship with a leader) Deontological Vs. Consequentalist Morality (Nuisances to social action) Deontological : disregard consequences—Value rational action; Never Lie, Never Kill Consequential : Only do things if consequences are good in the outcome; Instrumentally Rational Action—Depends upon the results— Depending on the outcome
