Management 15:25 1. Characteristics of management and jobs – the category is huge. Unlike  profession, managers do not share a common knowledge base. Managers are  not credential to do business.  a. Someone who makes decisions b. Controls and allocate resources c. Provides for the maintenance and growth of the organization Some managers are being told how to manage, but each individual tries to come  up with their own style. However, their decision making is limited. Scientific  management approach: Taylorism (theory X), the managers are following the  procedures given to them. It’s a top down managerial style.  Human relation approach: Theory Y, based on the Hawthorne experience. This is  the idea that the most productive employee is the happiest employee. Managers  must give positive reinforcement. This is in the case of non-profit organizations.  Collaboration model: Theory Z, teamwork approach. Vicki Smith – qui pro quo –  learning how to collaborate with team members sort of like self-management  imposing on workers.
