DEUTEROSTOMES-EXERCISE #9 First of course think about all of the usual stuff: symmetry? diploblastic or triploblastic? deuterostome or protostome? (I sincerely hope that the title of the lab would give that one away), movement? How do they feed? Marine or terrestrial? What types of structures do they use for respiration? What type of circulation do they have? Representative members? What are adaptations that have been made to living on LAND!?!?!? (obviously for those that live on land) Phylum Echinodermata -What type of symmetry? In the adult? In the larva? Penta-radial-adult Bilateral-larvae -What structures are found on the aboral surface? Oral surface? Aboral Surface: Spine, Anus, Disk, Madreporite Oral Surface: Mouth, Ambulacral groove, Tube feet -Explain the water vascular system? Function? How does this aid in movement? It’s used for locomotion, feeding, and respiration. It also helps it to adhere to surfaces? -Parts of the water vascular system, know the function: Madreporite Ring canals Radial canals Ampulla Tube feet -Which classes have prominent spines? Found in Echinoidea -How did they get the name “spiny skin?” Echino-spiny Dermata-Skin -What are ossicles? What are they made of? Ossicles are the plates that compromise a sea urchins skeleton or ‘test’ -What is the “test” of the organism? Skeleton Class Asteroidea-Sea Stars -On a diagram of a starfish or a dissected specimen be able to identify (and know the function of): oral surface, aboral surface, madreporite, tube feet, spines, arms, stomach (there are two, just know location), gonads, digestive glands, radial canals, ampulla -Can regenerate lost parts? YES! Class Ophiuroidea-Brittle stars -Where is the central disk found? The center! -The arms of members of the class asteroidean touch, how about members of the class ophiuroidea? Is this a good way to tell these two classes apart? The arms of brittle stars are separate and don’t connect like Sea Stars. Good way to tell them apart! -Bumpy skin extensions? No! -Tube feet have suckers? What is the function of the tube feet in these organisms?
