Summary of “Facts” for motional variables Distance cannot be negative while displacement can be (because of a choice of preferred direction). Likewise, speed cannot be negative while velocity can be. Speed = Distance/Elapsed time Vel. = Displacement/Elapsed time = (End point - Start point)/ Elapsed time Acceleration = (End velocity - Start velocity)/Elapsed time Speed and velocity are available from the distance/displacement-time plots as the slopes.
