Chapter 12 Treatment and Therapy Asylums —places for the chronically mental ill Philip Pinel —experimented with asylums by releasing patients from shackles allowed to roam around with more privileges. Most followed his experiment Dorothy Dix —did not like the idea that the mentally ill were in prison with criminals. Created the slow conversions from removing mentally ill patients from prisons and housing them in mental hospitals. Community Mental Health Centers Act —thousands of mental patients were released from hospitals and were granted their freedom. Established mental health agencies across the country and created a new “homeless” population. Therapy: Somatic (Biomedical) Therapy —making some sort of intervention with a person’s body Cerelleti—brought ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) to therapy world. 1.) ECT —attaches electrodes to temporal regions of the brain and induce electric shocks. Some positive effects Moniz—introduced psychosurgery 2.) Psychosurgery
