Same-Sex Sexual Activity-11-20-08 -Same sex sexual activity has existed forever, for as long as people have been recording their lives. Psychiatry and psychology: 1973 “homosexuality” no longer considered “abnormal” or “mental illness.” o Research methodology—improved over last 2-3-4 decades o Homosexuality hasn’t been accepted by society historically, prior to the 70s, there weren’t any gay clubs or promotion of gays. o The only gay people they had contact with were the ones that were seeking therapy that’s why they thought it was mental disorder because they were seeking help. o 70s—sexual revolution in the US—researchers would go out and do studies of people not in therapy. How natural is same sex activity? Non-human primates (even non-primate) Humans incarcerated Young children/adolescents ”Sexual Exploration…” o Studies show humans are more flexible (bisexual) than either gay or straight. EX: person committed crime and goes to jail, despite being straight their whole life, engages in gay activities. After let out they most likely return to straight lifestyle. Sexual Orientation (construct) defined differently across cultures:
