REVIEW FOR TEST 1 REVIEW: BAROQUE PERIOD: When you think of the word baroque what do you think? One building that is absolutely baroque –ST. PETERS, VERSAILLES , you think of extravagant. Monumental, beauty, includes music art and architecture. Louvre. All loved by kings and the pope(st. peters) o Only bad thing about St. peters—too many people worked on it o Versailles about 3 people worked on it. o 3 David’s Bernini-David. First two Davids were: Michelangelo-most famous, classic and Donatello—unusual, young looking boy Bernini: Bernini did a canopy, Ecstasy of St. Teresa—orgasm from god. David, Piazza of st peters Baroque artists are dramatic Caravaggio: Lived a crazy life, alcoholic died young. The calling of St. Matthew- dramatic use of light and dark (chiaroscuro –Rembrandt (she said daVinci here used it too) Gentileschi: Judith slaying Holofernes—big deal because she was raped when she was younger so it was ironic she painted Judith slaying people. Rape-father took the guy to court and he went to jail, this was all unusual at the time. She uses dark and light as well, dark in background light on face and skin. Comes from Caravaggio Many artists did too many wrongs things to lead themselves to a shorter lifespan Opera: Will not be on TEST! (skip birth of opera) --best example of baroque is Versailles -Cornaro chapel -Caravaggio—light and dark, Rembrandt, Gentileschi followed Caravaggio
