Aubrey McMillan Writing 2 TA Judith Hicks 16 April 2009 “It is ironic to think that man might determine his own future by something so seemingly trivial as the choice of an insect spray” (Carson 480). In her article “The Obligation to Endure,” Rachel Carson discusses the various consequences of environmental toxins, stemming from man’s growing use of harmful chemicals. In combating pests with various forms of insecticides, humans cause more harm, by far, than good. Not only do chemical pollutants immediately cause harm to earth’s fundamental life forms, but these poisons shift the environment out of balance. Although these chemicals allow humans to initially live more comfortably, the earth cannot flourish under such manipulation. In essence, Carson is correct in conveying that man’s attempt to control the environment, rather than adapt to it, has actually led to its demise. There is no question that the earth’s environment shapes and directs the life within it. Whether it be the smallest microbes invisible to the naked eye, exotic fish found in the depths of the oceans, or enormous mammals that graze earth’s terrain, life is the subject of its environment. However, one organism remains the exception - human beings. “Only within the moment of time represented by the present century has one species - man - acquired significant power to alter the nature of his world” (Carson 478). Thus, man’s desire to alter the environment has become a pressing issue over the past centuries.
